Merzouga

Merzouga, a small village in southeastern Morocco, lies on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, one of the largest and most spectacular sand dune fields in the Sahara Desert. Part of the Drâa-Tafilalet region, Merzouga has become a symbolic gateway to the Sahara, attracting adventurers, nomads, and tourists from around the world.

Though modest in population—home to just a few thousand residents—Merzouga holds immense cultural and ecological significance. Its surrounding golden dunes can reach heights of up to 150 meters, offering surreal landscapes especially during sunrise and sunset. The village is known for its camel treks, 4x4 desert safaris, sandboarding, and Berber music nights under the stars. Economically, Merzouga thrives on sustainable desert tourism, with local families operating guesthouses, desert camps, and guided excursions. Visitors can also explore nearby salt flats, seasonal lakes (like Dayet Srji, where flamingos gather), and traditional Berber villages. Often referred to as “The Jewel of the Sahara”, Merzouga offers a deeply immersive experience into Morocco’s desert culture—where silence, sand, and stars create an unforgettable atmosphere of peace and wonder.
